The Field

In the heart of the pandemic, I reached out for some kind of stability. Some kind of comfort. Something familiar.

It brought me back to the hobby of my youth - baseball cards. It took me by surprise, like a thief of the heart in the night. At times, I didn’t understand the impulses that were rushing through me, drove me with excitement.

I’d become a passionate viewer of Chris Sewall’s YouTube channel ‘Baseball Card Collector Investor Dealer (in that order).'

In one episode, Chris featured a card of Johnny Evers - one of 3 infielders comprising the Chicago Cubs turn-of-the-century double play combination ‘Tinker(s) to Evers to Chance.’ It was a mantra I’d heard in my youth. Now a songwriter of 25 years, I thought  ‘Man, that’s musical.’
