I heard Bruce Springsteen say that if you're writing from your head, you're in trouble. In songwriting - as in all art - if 1 + 1 = 2, you've 'failed'. 1 + 1 has to equal 3, and that extra thing comes from deeper in the body. The heart, the gut. 

And so a potent protest song comes from the same place as a love song. Same goes for 'baseball' songs. I got real love for these guys.
